Obituary for Hans E. Schanzenbach

Hans E. Schanzenbach, 87, of Pennside, passed away, Monday October 23, 2017 in the Mifflin Center. He was the husband of Hannelore Schanzenbach who passed away May 25, 2004. Born in Stuttgart, Germany he was a son of the late Gottfried and Marie (Buehler) Schanzenbach. Mr. Schanzenbach was a co-owner and Master Baker of Hanne Pastry Shop in the Antietam Valley Shopping Center. After selling the pastry shop, he was a candy maker for Zipf’s Candies, a pastry chef for Sheraton Hotel, and then a baker at Giant Foods Store. He was a member of the Reading Liederkranz for 48 years and was a singer with the Reading Liederkranz Singers. Hans was also a Mason with Teutonia Lodge #367.
Hans is survived by a daughter Heidi wife of Ronald Raab of Harrisonburg, VA and a son Gerhard husband of Shirl (Fredo) Schanzenbach of Bear, DE, three Grandchildren, Julie, Nicole and Tyler and one sister, Marieluise Ruehle of Grossbottwar, Germany. In addition to his wife, Mr. Schanzenbach is predeceased by three brothers, Erich, Gerhard, and Willy. Visitation with family and friends will be held on Thursday, October 26 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm with services beginning at 7:00 pm in the Lutz Funeral Home, Inc., 2100 Perkiomen Ave., Reading, PA 19606. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Reading Liederkranz Singers Fund, 143 Spook Lane, Reading, PA 19606. Lutz Funeral Home, Inc. Mount Penn in charge of arrangements.
